Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery, otherwise known as a reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure which reduces the size of the breast tissue. Not only can this procedure be used to reduce the overall size of the breasts, it can also be used to make the breasts more symmetrical, or to make the breasts more closely aligned with the overall shape of the patients body.
The process itself involves a removal of excess skin and tissue, and a repositioning of the nipples to leave smaller breasts. Breast reduction is a commonly performed procedure, and is used to reduce the pain and physical discomfort caused by overly large breasts.
Why Have Breast Reduction Surgery?
Women of varying ages choose to undertake a breast reduction procedure for a wide variety of reasons. Aside from the physical discomfort caused by overly large breasts, other issues such as excessive sweating under the breasts or difficulties in participating in sports are all factors which contribute to women having breast reduction surgery.
As well as the physical effects, overly large breasts can lead to an individual feeling uncomfortable in certain social situations. These factors can lead to more serious issues such as the individual becoming more introvert or even depressed.
Preparing For The Surgery, And The Procedure
Before the surgery, your surgeon is likely to discuss with you the possible results of your procedure, as well as making you fully aware of the potential risks and implications of breast reduction surgery.
The surgery itself can vary in the techniques used, although the most commonly practised method involves an incision that encircles the areola, and which follows a vertical line down the curve of the breast before extending along the breasts natural crease underneath. From here, excess breast tissue is removed, and the areola and the nipple are brought into their new position.
The surgery itself is likely to last approximately 2-3 hours depending on the individual, and is performed under a general anaesthetic.
Breast Reduction Recovery Period:
The majority of patients are able to go home within 2-3 days of breast reduction surgery, and during this period you will be required to wear bandaging and a surgical bra. Although the bandaging may be removed after a few days, it is likely you will be required to wear the surgical bra for a number of weeks following the surgery.
You are likely to experience bruising and swelling around the breast area for a period of 2-3 weeks following the surgery, although your surgeon may well be able to prescribe medication to assist you with this. Most people are able to return to work approximately 2 weeks after their surgery, although you will be advised to avoid strenous activity for upto 4-6 weeks following your procedure.
The Risks Of Breast Reduction Surgery:
All forms of surgery carry an element of risk, particularly those which are carried out under a general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make you fully aware of these risks during your initial consultations.
Breast reduction surgery does leave scarring, although these are likely to settle down after a number of months.
